ولد أحمد بن زيدون في قرطبة سنة 394 هـ (1003ن)، ومات في أشبيليه سنة 463 (1070م). وكان طيلة حياته عالماً من أعلام الأدب والسياسية، إذ عرف، أكثر ما عرف، بقصائده الغزلية وغرامه الأكبر بولادة سليلة الأسرة التي قضت نحواً من ثلاثة قرون على رأس السلطة في تلك البلاد، كما اشتهر برسائله النثرية، وديباجته المشرقة.
وبين طيات هذا الكتاب دراسة تحدثت عن ابن زيدون وشعره والعصر الذي عاش فيه، كما ويضم مقتظفات من شعر ابن زيدون، ومقتطفات أخرى من نثره. وإذا ما عدنا إلى المقتطفات الشعرية نجد أن تشتمل على قصائد رسائل شعرية مجالس أنس، مقطعات. أما المقتطفات النثرية فتشتمل: الرسالة الهزلية، الرسالة الجدية، إلى ابن مسلمة، إلى المعتضد، رسالة عتاب، والغاية الأولى والخيرة من جمع هذه المختارات، أن يطلع القارئ على نماذج لنتاج الحضارة التي تعتبر دون أدنى شك، أساس الحضارات القريبة الراهنة، في مختلف العصور التي تلت انكفاء الموجة العربية عن أوروبا، وانتشرت في سائر بلاد العالم.
