تعلم في المدرسة الابتدائية ببلدة الشوير ثم دخل المدرسة الوطنية العالية البروتستانتية فمدرسة يوحنا الصايغ في الشوير. التحق بدار المعلمين الابتدائية في بيروت ونال شهادته عام 1949. انضم إلى الجامعة اللبنانية وتخرج بإجازة جامعية في الآداب عام 1956.
تتلمذ بالعربية على يد الأستاذ الشاعر نايف نكد الذي وجد في تلميذه الصغير طاقة شعرية فشجعه على النظم وهو بعد على مقاع إيليا الياس الحاوي شقيق الشاعر خليل حاوي

تتلمذ بالعربية على يد الأستاذ الشاعر نايف نكد الذي وجد في تلميذه الصغير طاقة شعرية فشجعه على النظم وهو بعد على مقاعد المدرسة التكميلية. تأثر بعدد من الشعراء والكتاب الذين برزوا على مسرح الأدب في تلك الحقبة وبينهم إبراهيم اليازجي وسعيد عقل وفوزي الملعوف وشفيق المعلوف وخليل مطران.
انصرف إلى التعليم بعد تخرجه من دار المعلمين وتابع في الوقت نفسه تخصصه في الأدب العربي في الجامعة اللبنانية حيث لازم الناقد الفرنسي بيكون ثلاث سنوات وتأثر بمنهجه النقدي المقارن.

أبو نواس، الشاعر الذي ذاع صيته على مرّ الزمان، وذاع شعره على كل لسان شاعر أبدع في عطائه الشعري، وكان له خطاً شعرياً متميزاً، من جميع المناسبات، وقد مثل هذا الشاعر واقع عصره المتمزق بين الإيمان والإلحاد والزهد والشهرة والبطولة واللهو والمجون، وفي معاناة إنسان ضاع عليه اليقين فصرع من دونه وباتت خمرته أداة لقتل الهموم، يجزع من الوعي، تطل عبره أحداق الرعب والمسؤولية والزمن المحيل وكل عاهة من عاهات الإنسان والزمان، هذا كله يمكن استقراؤه من خلال تلك الصفحات في جزأي هذا الكتاب، وفي شعره الذي جاء مشروحاً خير معبر عن كل كلام فيه وحوله "أبو نواس".
