يعد أبو نواس عند قدامى المؤرخين للأدب العربي ممثل المدرسة الشعرية الحديثة؛ مدرسة المحدثين. ويقول أبو عبيدة: أبو نواس للمحدثين كامرئ القيس للأولين، لأنه الذي فتح لهم هذه الفطن، ودلّهم على هذه المعاني، ومن ثمّ سمي أبو نواس أيضاً " أبا المحدثين". وعلى الرغم من أن أبا نواس نظم أشعاره في المديح، وفي الرثاء أحياناً، على غرار الشعر القديم، فإنه قد تحرر فيما عدا ذلك من مناهج من سبقوه في الموضوع والقالب، فالباحث لا يجد عنده أشعار الحماسة، وأغاني الغزل التي يجدها عند شعراء الصحراء، والتي كانت غرضاً لتندره وسخريته، بل يرى قوة شاعرية تتجلى في أشعاره التي قالها في الخمر، وغزل المذكر، فإنه خصب الفكرة، واسع الخبرة في هذين المجالين الأدبيين، بحيث يستطيع أن يتغنى بمحاسنهما في صور مطّردة التجدد، وفوق هذا يشتمل ديوان أبي نواس، الذي نقلب صفحاته، للمرة الأولى في الأدب العربي، على باب خاص لشعر الطرد والصيد، وهذا الشعر يتناول، في أساسه، وصف كلاب الصيد، والبزاة، والخيل، ولكنه يصف أيضاً بعض أنواع الوحش، ويمتاز بثورة لفظية خاصة. حقاً احتذى أبو نواس في هذا الشعر نماذج وصف الحيوان في شعر البادية القديم، ومع ذلك يبدو أنه رفع هذا الشعر إلى مرتبة الاستقلال والتفرد. وقد لقي هذا الشعر، فيما بعد، نمواً وازدهاراً في طرديات ابن المعتز. ولئن كان أبو نواس ليس هو نفسه الذي ابتكر كل ما للمحدثين من بدع، فلقد كان قوة صياغته الشعرية هي التي أعارت بدعهم القوالب التي احتاجوا إليها لتثبت ولتبرز بوجه عام، وبهذا الصنيع سما أبو نواس بالشعر العربي فجعله ذا محصول متناسب مع الملابسات الثقافية والاجتماعية الجديدة في الدولة العباسية. وقد قدّمت موضوعات أبي نواس والمحدثين، مرة أخرى في القرن السادس، للشعر العربي بواعث جديدة لما أخذ هذا الشعر في مقطعات ابن قزمان قالباً جديداً؛ في الترجل واللغة الدارجة. وإذاً، فإن نشر أشعار أبي نواس، في هذا الكتاب، على منهج علمي دقيق، ليس أمراً تقتضيه شهرته، وتعلق النفوس به فحسب، بل هو حق يستوجبه، فوق ذلك بكثير، ما لهذه الأشعار من دلالة تاريخية أدبية.
