إن الهدف من وضع هذا القاموس هو أن يكون تسجيلاً لطائفة من أهم المصطلحات الإنجليزية في اللغويات الحسابية بحيث يمكن الإضافة إليها مستقبلاً للإسهام في سد فجوة لمستها في العمل المعجمي العربي في هذا التخصص. والهدف الثاني هو أن يكون القاموس أداة لغوية جاهزة بما يحتويه من ترجمات عربية مقترحة.
لهذه المصطلحات وما ألحق بها من معلومات لغوية وأمثلة على استعمال المصطلحات، فتوفر على القارئ جهد البحث عن هذه المعلومات في عشرات المؤلفات. فيمكن أن يستفيد منه المترجم المشتغل بنقل التكنولوجيا في هذا المجال، كما يمكن أن يستفيد الطالب والباحث المتخصص في نظم الكمبيوتر وتعريبها والذي قد لا يكون بالضرورة ملماً باصطلاحات العلوم اللغوية التي تكثر في مؤلفات هذا المجال (كالتفريق بين Complement وModifier وAdjunct وAdverbial وAdverb وغيرها). أما القارئ العادي الذي قد تصادفه مصطلحات هذا العلم في عمله أو قراءاته فقد يستفيد بما ذيلت به المصطلحات من شروح وتعريفات على الرغم مما قد يشوبها-لأسباب عملية-من تبسيط قد يعترض عليه المتخصص.
وكان لزاماً أن يتضمن القاموس أيضاً مصطلحات النحو التقليدي والنظريات اللغوية الحديثة والرياضيات والمنطق وعلم النفس مما له صلة بمصطلحات اللغويات الحسابية وعلوم الكمبيوتر ويشيع استعماله فيها. وقد سعى قدر الإمكان إلى تمييز المصطلحات ببيان ما إذا كانت مما استحدثه هذا العلم أو مما أخذه من هذه العلوم الأخرى. وليس القصد من هذا التمييز أن يكون تأريخاً علمياً لأصول المصطلحات بل الغرض منه إيضاح الخطوط العامة لتطور المصطلحات والمفاهيم وترابطها عندما يقتضي الأمر مثل هذا الإيضاح.
ومن أمثلة تنوع مصطلحات علم اللغويات الحسابية الآلية وتمازجها مع هذه العلوم الأخرى ما يلي: Finite-Stare Automaton وNatural-Language Frontend وTransition Network Sematic وVerb Register وParsing Algorithm وunderstander.
ويشتمل القاموس أيضاً على مداخل بأسماء بعض البرامج والمشاريع المشهورة في الأوساط الأكاديمية ومراكز الأبحاث كنماذج تطبيقية لبعض الاتجاهات السائدة في معالجة اللغو الطبيعية والذكاء الاصطناعي، مثل: Shrdlu وEliza وLunar وBabel، مع نبذة عنها وعن مبتكريها وتاريخها واستخداماتها.
