أبو نواس شاعر سهل في خمرياته ومجونياته وزهدياته، ولكنه كان يعمد إلى الغريب في غير ذلك، ولا سيما في طردياته، وشعر جديد المعاني والألفاظ، فيه نكتة حلوة، وفيه ما يعكس نفسه وعصره فكان المرآة لذلك حيث ترى فيه عبثه ومجونه وتهتكه وكفره، ونرى كذلك ثقته بالله وتوبته وزهده في الخمر والمجون، ونرى فيه عصره الذي شاع فيه الاستهتار بالمعاصي والاستهزاء بالدين.
وفي شعره يتجلى أيضاً نزوعه عن أساليب العرب ومعانيهم وأوصافهم إلى أشياء جديدة توافق بيئته بأغراضها وتصوراتها، ويعرض علينا ثقافات عصره المختلفة التي اختلطت فيها علوم الدين الإسلامية وآراء البدع بالعلوم المنقولة والحكمة الهندية والأساطير اليونانية. وفي طيات هذا الكتاب ديوان أبي نواس الذي جمعت فيه قصائده.
