اختبار تفهم الموضوع للمسنين هو رائز إسقاطي يتألف من مثيرات (لوحات) تستثير إستجابات من الفرد كاشفةً مشاعره ودوافعه وكيفية التعامل مع المشاكل وحلّها.
يستخدم اختبار تفهم الموضوع للمسنين كأداة للتدخل العلاجي أو "إعادة بناء الموقف" الذي عايشه المسن بطرقة أو بأخرى، كما يساعد هذا الإختبار في كشف بعض السمات الأساسية للشخصية عند المسن: النزوات والإنفعالات والمشاعر والصراعات والنزاعات الأساسية المكبوتة (عادةً لاواعية).
في هذا الإختبار، لا توجد أجوبة صحيحة وأخرى خاطئة، في سنة 1975، نشر "بيلاك" اختبار تفهّم الموضوع للمسن، وذلك بعد أن نشرَ سنة 1949 اختبار تفهم الموضوع للأطفال الذي هو بالتالي إمتداد لإختبار تفهم الموضوع (1935).كان ثمّة حاجةٌ لإختبار إسقاطي للمسنين خاصة.
خلال منتصف السبعينيات، بدأ معدل العمر الإجمالي عند الإنسان يزداد تلقائياً بفضل تقدم العلم وتطور شركات الأدوية، لذا قرر "بيلاك" بمساعدة زوجة ابتكار اختبار على غرار "اختبار تفهم الموضوع" ولكن للمسنين حيث اعتبر أن الإختبارات الإسقاطية قد ثبت نفعها عند الأطفال (اختبار تفهم الموضوع للأطفال) وعند الراشدين (اختبار تفهم الموضوع)، لذا يجب تطبيق إختبار إسقاطي على الفئة العمرية المتقدمية بالعمر.
يتألف هذا الكتاب من قسمين: القسم النظري مؤلف من أربعة فصول وهي: الفصل الأول، ويتحدث عن المسن بشكل عام، مشاكلة النفسية والفردية والإجتماعية، كما سيستعرض هذا الفصل المشاكل الصحية والنفسية التي يمكن أن يواجهها المسن خلال يومياته، أما الفصل الثاني فمخصص لتاريخ اختبار تفهم الموضوع للمسنين، وكيف بدأ العمل في ورقة التنقيط التي تساعد على إكتشاف المسن ومشاكله، فهذا الفصل مخصص لبحث تاريخ ورقة تنقيط اختبار تفهم الموضوع.
أما الفصل الثالث فهو لتحليل صور اختبار تفهم الموضوع للمسنين ولعرض عدد كبير من الأمثلة لإيضاح هدف وتحليل كل صورة من صور الإختبار.
في الفصل الرابع سنفسّر ورقة تنقيط اختبار تفهم الموضوع للمسنين حسب ما وضعته "بيلاك" ولتوضيح فكرة التنقيط سنقدم الكثير من الأمثلة.
القسم الثاني من الكتاب تطبيقيّ ومؤلفٌ من فصلين هما: الفصل الخامس مخصص لدراسة ثلاث حالات لمسنين يعانون من مشاكل نفسية بعد تقدمهم في العمر، تمّ إستعمال اختبار تفهم الموضوع للمسنين مع الحالات الثلاث.
أما الفصل السادس والأخير، فهو عبارة عن بحث في اختبار تفهم الموضوع للمسنين وتوهم المرض عند المسنين، وسيتناول موضوع البحث: تحديد التساؤلات، وفرضيات البحث، وأهميته، وحدوده، ونتائجه، وتحليله، ومناقشته، وقد تمّ تطبيق هذا الإختبار على خمسين شخصاً.
