"صاحت وهي تدنو من اللوحة ممتهلة: رباه أخيراًً سيخلد حلمي، حلمي الكبير الذي تبدعه أناملك؟ قال ممازحاً إياها: إذن، فأنا حلم في النهاية يا ترى؟ اقتربت منه نظرت إلى وجهه، كأنها تراه للمرة الأولى. وهل هناك أجمل من الحلم يا غيث؟ الحقيقة أجل. وما الفرق؟ سألت وهي تغرق في عمق عينيه. لا أدري! ألا تعرف كيف يكون العلم حقيقة؟ أنا أخبرك.. يكون حقيقة عندما يكون عظيماً. الحلم العظيم هو الحقيقة التي تحرك فينا الشوق الدائم إلى المتابعة، إلى الصعود، إلى الارتقاء، الحلم العظيم هو الحقيقة الصافية التي تجعل البحر أكثر عمقاً، والجبل أشد رسوخاً، والسهل أعظم اتساعاً، والسماء أروع صفاءً، والقلب أقوى اتقاداً والنفس أنبل وأسمى".
رواية تتوقد ابتهاجاً بالعودة إلى الحياة، وفي "التوق" تحكي أميمة الخشن ومن خلال أسلوب فيه الرائع من الصنعة الروائية التي تهز القارئ، تتحد معه في معاناته، وتجره معها إلى حيث إشراقات الحياة لينتفض من موته المؤقت بفعل تصاريف الحياة والمجتمع، كالعنقاء تبعث نفسها من عمق الموت.
"في قديم الزمان، عاشت فتاة تعدو. تقف قليلاً، ثم تعدو. تنظر خلفها، تتلفت حولها، ثم تعدو وفي عينيها قلق غريب ورهيب. كأنها تفر من خطر داهم، مجهول، طوال الوقت. خطر يتبعها على الدوام دون أن تراه، أو تعرف ماهيته. تواصل العدو. تلهث، تتعثر، تقع، تنهض من جديد وتتبع العدو. بعد كل خطوة تنظر خلفها بعد كل سقطة تتلفت حولها إلى أن شلها الإعياء. توقفت. تنفست بصعوبة بالغة، بينما العرق يتصبب من جسمها غزيراً بارداً. نظرت وراءها، وحولها، وأمامها. وجدت نفسها في مكانها. طوال الوقت كانت تعدو في مكانها. تعدو داخل دائرة مغلقة لا تتعدى محيطها أبداً. كادت ثرى تستسلم لليأس، وللنهاية! فجأة سطع أمام نظرها ضوء بعيد، خافت، وسمعت صوتاً يناديها من جهة الضوء، فتفجر في كيانها التوق، واستعادة إرادة الحياة".
