الكتاب عبارة عن مجموعة مقالات استطاع المؤلف أن يربط بينها برباط ذكي فى عملها كرسائل موجهة إلى صديق، لتحمل أفكار ورؤية الكاتب.
فرسائله موجهة إلى صديقه (سين).. وما (سين) إلا القارئ نفسه. وقد استهل تلك الرسائل برسالة قصيرة جاء فيها: ""أشبه، وأنا أكتب هذه الرسائل، أحد العميان وهو يصف الفيل حسب الموضع الذي لمسه منه. كلنا ذلك الأعمى، نهتدي بالتجربة إلى جزءٍ من معرفةٍ كلية. كلنا يرى الأشياء حسب لون المنظار الذي ينظر من خلاله، فليكن لك رأيك المستقل في تقييم ما تقرأ، لكن تذكر، وأنت تزهو برأيك، أننا جميعا ذلك الأعمى""!.
تناول المؤلف في هذا الكتاب وفي الفصل الأول منه الكتابة كشغف، أو كشكل من أشكال العشق، أو كجسر لمقاربة حقيقة ما. كما تأمل المزاج الثقافي العربي تجاه الكتابة الساخرة أو الدعابة بشكل عام، وهو ما تضمنه الفصل المعنون بـ(الدعابة في زمن الكوليرا) وهو الفصل الذي تناول فيه كذلك بؤس الكوميديا العربية، وافتقارها إلى الفكرة اللامعة والأداء الذكي. وقد وظف المؤلف ميله للدعابة في ما يشبه القراءة النقدية لبعض ملامح حياتنا الثقافية والاجتماعية بأسلوب فكه. من ذلك على سبيل المثال لا الحصر العلاقات الاجتماعية والأسرية وأدبياتها الزاخرة بالدعابة. أما الفصل الأخير من الكتاب فأشبه ما يكون بمحاولة لاسترجاع زمن مفقود. وقد لجأ المؤلف إلى الكلمات لمقاومة النسيان، واستعادة لحظاته الهاربة.
