كتاب التوق الى الخلود تأليف فرديناند ألكييه، عن هذا الكتاب: "يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى التعريف بالرغبة في الأبدية (التوق إلى الخلود) وإلى اكتشاف منابعها العاطفية والعقلية، وأخيراً تحديد قيمتها والمكانة التي يجدر إعطاؤها لها في الحياة. لكنها لا تعالج موضوع الأبدية بحد ذاته: لذلك سمحنا لأنفسنا بإطلاق صفة أبدي على حقائق متباينة جداً (كالقوانين الطبيعية، والذات الاستعلائية).
وبما أننا رأينا في رفض الزمن الشكل المشترك لكل الأهواء البشرية، حاولنا أيضاً أن نبرهن أن هذا الرفض هو هوى أساسي بدل أن نشرع في أن نختزل به كل الأهواء الخاصة.
ما يلي ليس إذن لا ميتافيزيقيا الأبدية ولا سيكولوجيا الأهواء الواقعية: إنه فقط تحليل للمحاولات العاطفية أو الفكرية التي يرفض الوعي بواسطتها التعبير ويرتقي إلى مفهوم الديمومة".
