في المسرح الغربي المعاصر، وفيما بعد النصف الأول من القرن الحالي، كانت هناك تجارب عديدة مهمة تركت أثرها في تغيير مفهوم وممارسة المسرح. هذه التجارب لم يكن لها حضور من خلال عروضها المسرحية فحسب، بل ومن خلال العمل التطبيقي والتنظيري الذي أعطى مؤشرات كبيرة لإرساء مراجع الاتجاهات ورؤى أغنت التجربة المسرحية المعاصرة.
وفي هذا الكتاب يقف الكاتب عند هذه التجارب حيث يقوم بدراستها لإيجاد العلاقة التي تربطها بمسيرة التجارب الأساسية التي حصلت في بداية هذا القرن والتي أرست المبادئ الأولية للممارسة العملية والمنهجية للمسرح الحديث والمعاصر، وذلك من خلال المعارف العملية والنظرية التي تركها الجهد الكبير لستانيسلافستي، ميرهولد، كربو، فاختاتكوف، ابيا، كريك ودولين.
وقد قام الباحث بطرح بعض المعالم لتجربة فنية استقت من الجذور وعملت على إيجاد خصوصية لها في ممارسة المسرح ومحاورة الثقافة المعاصرة، ويعني ذلك تجربة باربا مؤسس مسرح الأودن والمدرسة العالمية للمسرح الانثروبولوجي والتي تركت أثرها على المسرح المعاصر ولا تزال تثير أسئلة كثيرة حول إشكاليات متعددة في المسرح الغربي.
بالإضافة إلى ذلك فقد اشتمل هذا الكتاب على ملحق تطرق فيه الباحث إلى الكتب والمقالات التي نشرت باللغة الإيطالية بخصوص الموضوع والتي اعتمد عليها الباحث، كما تضمن مجموعة من المقالات التي كتبها باربا والتي تخص مصطلحات ومفردات أساسية وجوهرية في المسرح والتي تناولها باربا حسب تفكيره وفهمه وممارسته للمسرح، مثل" "الدراماتورجيه"، "الفعل الدرامي الفيزيقي"، "المونتاج المسرحي" "المخرج" "المتفرج" و"الثقافة المسرحية" كما ألحق بالكتاب جدولاً ضمّ أسماء العروض المسرحية التي أنتجتها وقدمتها مجموعة الأودن، كما ضمّ زمان ومكان الدورات التي أقامتها المدرسة العالمية للمسرح الانتثروبولوجي، والكتب التي قام بنشرها باربا باللغة الإيطالية، وكذلك بعض الكتب والمؤلفات حول عمل ونشاط باربا والأودن.
