لم يكن نصير الدين الطوسي (ولد سنة 597ه ، وتوفي سنة 672ه) باحثاً علمياً وفلكياً رياضياً فحسب، بل كان فيلسوفاً له صرح فلسفي متكامل من الناحية العلمية والناحية النظرية شأنه شأن فلاسفة الإسلام كالكندي والفارابي وإبن سينا وغيرهم.
وكما يشير المؤلف الشيخ محمد حسن درة في هذا الكتاب برزت أهمية الطوسي في الفكر الإسلامي من خلال مزجه بين علم الكلام والفلسفة، متابعاً لإبن سينا في تطوير هذا المزج لمصلحة الفلسفة، مما حدا بكثيرين القول عنه بأنه شارح لإبن سينا.
توزع الكتاب على ثلاثة فصول، الأول في نشأة نصير الدين الطوسي، وأقوال العلماء فيه، وبعض حكايات رويت عنه فيها عبرة ونكت علمية وكتب ورسائل ومقالات وترجمات نسبت إليه. أما الفصل الثاني فيسلط الضوء حول الظروف السياسية والإجتماعية التي عاشها الطوسي كعالم وسياسي وفلكي عندما كان المشرق يُجتاح من الجيش المغولي من بلاد فارس إلى العاصمة العباسية في بغداد موضحاً علاقته بالإسماعيليين في قلاعهم وعن سبب الذهاب إليهم والعيش معهم قرابة ثلاثة عقود كان لها النصيب الأوفر من الكتابة الطوسية في ميادين الفلسفة والكلام والآداب والأخلاق ثم ذكر سبب مصاحبته لملك المغول هولاكو وأنه كان مرغماً في ذلك وأنه لم يكن للطوسي أية علاقة في مسألة غزو بغداد والقضاء على الخلافة، ثم محاولة فيها بيان حقيقة ما كان الطوسي يعتقده من مذهب الإمامية وأنه لم يكن إسماعيلياً.
ويأتي الفصل الثالث والأخير وفيه استعراض لآراء الطوسي في مسائل عدة فلسفية وكلامية وبالأخص في مسألة الوجود والماهية والتي كان ينحو فيها منحى الفلاسفة وعلى الأخص إبن سينا.
