بين وعي زائف حيناً ووعي مفتت أحايين أخرى، يجد الإنسان نفسه دهشاً، باحثاً عن تجربة تواصلية تعرّفه بأن وجوده ومصيره مرتبطين بوجود ومصير الآخر، هذا الآخر الذي يتأرجح مفهومه بين السلب والإيجاب، بين لإثبات عن طريق النفي أو العكس، ولكنه يعبر باستمرار عن ذلك التلازم بين القراءتين، فنحن بحاجة دائماً إلى قراءة مزدوجة، لأن كل نظرة إلى الذات تنطوي على نظرة إلى الآخر، والعملية مقلوبة ايضاً، مع ملاحظة أن الآخر ليس جوهراً ثابتاً، ولا يمكن أن يمثل حالة ثابتة، فهو محكوم بسيرورة تاريخية متغيرة، إذ لا يمثل حالة واحدة متحدة لا تقبل التفكيك، وإنما هو حالة متنوعة.
فصول هذا الكتاب هو محاولة متواضعة للإجابة عن هذه التساؤلات وإزالة كل الهواجس من زاوية نراها مهمة، وهي التمييز بين شقين متلازمين للنظرية التواصلية عند هابرماس. الشق الفلسفي، من جهة، والشق السياسي من جهة أخرى، لنكتشف في نهاية المطاف فيلسوفاً منفرداً، يرفع شعار العقل بمفهومه التذاوتي ويعلي من شأن الديمقراطية في صورتها التواصلية، مؤكداً على الطابع التوجيهي الذي تتميز به فلسفته، من خلال الربط المستمر، بين النظرية، والممارسة.
