تعد السامرية ديانة توحيدية تؤمن بالبعث والحساب، وبموسى نبياً وبأسفاره كتاباً لها. ويعتقد السامريون بأن ديانتهم الأقرب إلى الإسلام وأنهم المقصودون بقوله تعالى: {ومن قوم موسى أمة يهدون بالحق وبه يعدلونْ}. ويقولون بأنهم وفدوا على النبي محمد، وحصلوا منه على عهد خطه لهم علي بن أبي طالب، ويؤكد السامريون: أنهم السلالة الحقيقية لشعب إسرائبل، وأنهم يملكون أقدم نسخة خطية للتوراة، لكن اليهود يعدونهم أغراب عن بني إسرائيل وأن معتقداتهم وثنية وتوراتهم غير صحيحة. بينما يعتقد الباحثون بأن التوراتين هما كتاب واحد كتبه عزرا وأن الخلافات اللاحقة باعدت بينهما. ولكن لا تزال معظم الاختلافات بين التوراة السامرية واليهودية شكلية بالغالب. وتتهم الدراسات الكنسية واليهودية النص السامري المترجم للعربية بأنه ترجمة إسلامية، ولكن في الحقيقة ليس كذلك، فقد تكون الترجمة متأثرة بثقافة وتعابير المترجم الذي عاش في وسط عربي إسلامي، وقد يكون المترجم حاول تقريب التوراة لأفهام المسلمين، ولكنه بالتأكيد لم يحاول التقرّب للمسلمين على حساب كتابه المقدس.
