كناز ورماز توأمان يبلغان من العمر اثني عشر عاماً يعيشان في مدينة "نزوى" عند سفح "الجبل الأخضر" وهي بيئة تجمع بين الصخرِ والشجرِ، يجيد والدهما صناعة السلال والحصر وتجارة البضائع في السوق ويملك أيضاً أرضاً زراعية تضم أربع أشجار نخيل.
عندما انتهى العام الدراسي هيأ الأب لولديه عملاً صيفياً فقرر أن يُعلّمهما كيفية زراعة أشجار النخيل، فأحضر فسيلتي نخيلٍ، وطلب منهما مساعدته في الزرع والريِّ والرعايةِ.. وجعل كل واحد منهما مسؤولاً عن فسيلته.
اهتم كناز بفسيلته ورعاها حتى كبرت وأثمرت، أما رماز لم يهتم بفسيلته فماتت.
تعلّم كناز من والده العمل بالتجارة وتابع دراسته حتى أصبح مهندساً زراعياً.
أما رماز فوجد له طريقاً آخر اختفى على أثره سنوات!!
