تكمن أهمية كتاب النخلة لأبي حاتم سهل بن عثمان السجستاني المتوفى سنة 255هـ في كونه من أقدم المؤلفات في هذا الموضوع، وفيه كثير من النقول عن العلماء المشهورين، وكثير من الآيات القرآنية الكريمة والأحاديث النبوية الشريفة في تفضيل النخل، كما امتاز بانفراده بكثير من الأخبار عن مواطن وحود النخل وبتأكيده على أن النخل لا ينبت إلا في بلاد الإسلام والمسلمين وذلك لقداسة هذه البلاد وعلو شأنها. وقد انفرد المؤلف بذلك إذ لم يهم أحد من اللغويين بالإشارة إلى ما أشار إليه أبو حاتم في كتابه.
كما واهتم المؤلف بذكر نوى التمر وأوصافه وأجزائه ومنافعه وطريقة زرعه وزمنه، واهتم أيضاً بالحديث عن حياة النخلة ومراحل نموّها المختلفة، ونضح البُسر وأمراضه وأنواع التمر وجنيه ومرابدِهِ، وجماعات النخل، ثم ذكر في آخر كتابه قسماً من الأخبار عن الأراضي التي تنبت النخل. لكل هذا يعدّ كتاب النخلة منهلاً للعلماء الذين جاءوا بعده، كأبي محمد الأنباري في شرح المفضليات، وابن سيده في المخص، والفيومي في المصباح المنير، وغيرهم.
