ظهرت البدايات الأولى لما يعرف اليوم بالعلوية في صدر الإسلام، ومنذ ذلك الحين انتشرت بين الشعوب وفي الأمصار، بشكل يتناسب مع عاداتها الاجتماعية والاقتصادية وعقائدها القومية. ومنذ علي بن أبي طالب (رضي الله عنه) وأبي ذر، اكتسبت العلوية ميراثاً حيوياً وباتت رمزاً للمقاومة وهدفاً للتنكيل.
يقدر العلويون في تركيا بثلث السكان، ويتوزعون على ثلاثة أعراق، العرب والأكراد ثم الأتراك.
طوال العهد العثماني، شكل العلويون رأس الرمح في الانتفاضات الكردية المسلحة ضد الدولة العثمانية. وكانت العلوية، في الكثير من الأحيان، تشكل المعارضة ضد الاضطهاد الديني والمذهبي العثماني. كما ظهر العلويون الأتراك في التاريخ السياسي للدولة العثمانية كمناصرين وأتباع ودعاة للدولة الصفوية في إيران. لهذا فقد ذهبوا آنذاك ضحية الصراع الصفوي-العثماني.
شعر العلويون في تركيا بشيء من الراحة مع أتاتورك. ونظر بعضهم إليه على أنه المخلص.
في السنوات اللاحقة أصبح الطابع القومي للدولة التركية يشكل عقبة كأداء أمام صلة العلويين بالدولة، لا سيما بالنسبة للأكراد منهم.
في النصف الثاني من القرن العشرين أخذ العلويون يدخلون في نسيج الدولة والمجتمع، حيث أخذت غالبيتهم تؤيد الأحزاب العلمانية. إلا أن الانقلابات العسكرية ذات الطابع القومي المتشنج التي قامت في الستينات والسبعينات وبداية الثمانينات، شكلت حكومات تنظر إلى الأقليات نظرة كراهية وعداء، مما حدا باستخدام أساليب القمع والاضطهاد ضد العلويين، لا سيما العرب والأكراد منهم.
ولا تزال العلاقات بين الدولة التركية والعلويين بين مد وجزر، وهذا يتعلق بمقدار ابتعاد هذه الحكومة التركية أو تلك عن التعصب القومي التركي.
