"منير الشريف" في كتابه العلويون من هم وأين هم؟ يؤرخ وجودهم في سوريا وفي أغلب مناطقها درساً وتمحيصاً - من عادات وتقاليد، وشعائر وعشائر وغير ذلك ولم يأت على ذكر العلويين في لبنان سوى حدث واحد مفاده أن بعض العلويين سكنوا في مناطق عكار والقسم الآخر هاجر إلى مناطق جبلة وصافيتا.
في البدء تحدث المؤلف عن محافظة اللاذقية جغرافياً: مساحتها وأنهارها وأراضيها وأهلها، واقتصادياتها، ورحلات العرب وخاصة - الذين تسموا بالعلويين مؤخراً - إليها، وسكناهم فيها، ومذهب العلويين، المنبثق عن المذهب الشيعي الإسلامي؛ والحياة العشائرية في العلويينن ورؤساء العشائر، ورجال الدين وتأثيرهم؛ وعادات العلويين: في استقبال ضيوفهم، ومأكلهم وملبسهم وسحرهم وفرحهم، وزواجهم وتربية أولادهم، وزينتهم وأعيادهم، وقراهم ومساكنهم، وبحثت عن أخلاقهم ووطنيتهم وشجاعتهم ونشاطهم وذكائهم - تراث آبائهم العرب الأولين. كما وبيّن في هذا الكتاب: أعمال الشعوبيين وحكامهم، وابتغاءهم الفتنة وتفريق الأمة العربية، باسم الطائفية والمذهبية، لكي لا تقوم قائمة العرب، ويطالبوا بحقهم المغتصب، ويعيدوا مجدهم السابق.
