تدور الرواية أحداثها عن توأمتين ولدتا في العام 1984، إذ كان والدهما ثملاً دائماً، وعلاوة على ذلك كان زير نساء وبينما كانت والدتهما راقصة تعري في إحدى الملاهي الليلة في بريطانيا.
وبمعنى آخر، عندما ولدت التوأمتين، (دارلا وكارلا) اللتان تشبهان بعضهما بإستثناء شيء واحد فقط، لدى دارلا عينان زرقاوان فيما كانت كارلا لديها عين زرقاء والأخرى سوداء، لم يكن لدى والدهما أي أدنى فكرة عن الموضوع برمته.
ولذلك، تولت والدتهما مسؤولية رعاية الصغيرتين، وحاولت أن ترعاهما إلى أن أصيبت بمرض السرطان، وبعد مرور 3 أشهر، توفت والدتهما، ولذا، أرسلت التوأمتين إلى ملجأ الأيتام عندما كانتا 11 شهراً فقط، لأن والدتهما لم تكن لديها أي أقارب يمكنهم رعاية التوأمتين.
وبعد مرور فترة زمنية، تبنت واحدة من الأسر البريطانية إحدى الفتاتين في الملجأ، ولذلك قد اختاروا دارلا، فيما تبنت أسرة راقية من الولايات المتحدة الأميركية، إذ يعمل الرجل في وزارة الدفاع، الفتاة الأخرى كارلا.
