يُصبح البحر الأبيض المتوسط، أكثر من أي وقت مضى، تقاطعاً للقرب، يُقْحِم في مصير مشترك سكان كلا الضفتين، ووحدهما: المعرفة والقبول المتبادل، مع احترام الاختلافات، كفيلان بخلق غنى ورفاه للجميع. إنّ الهدف من هذا العمل، هو: تشجيع المعرفة واستعمالها بالطريقة التي تسمح بتعزيز السلام والتنمية. كما يندرج هذا العمل في إطار الجهد المبذول منذ زمن، وينبغي إعطاؤه مزيداً من الإشعاع. ومن الضروري، اليوم، إعادة اكتشاف أينما يتمثل إرث منطقة البحر الأبيض المتوسط، لتقدير قيمة الفضاء المتعدد الأبعاد، حيث التعدد الثقافي والديني يشكلان مصدرين مُمكِنَيْنِ لثقافة التعايش، حيث يُوجد إرثٌ مشتركٌ، تكون فيه لمختلف الديانات مهمة مشتركة من أجل السلام، وحيث إنّ من الممكن بناء إنسية جديدة، بالدراسة والتمحيص في موضوعات الديموقراطية، والعلمانية، والحوار، ودور الأديان؛ لأن في منطقة البحر الأبيض المتوسط، من الممكن حماية حقوق الإنسان الأساسية، والحرية الدينية، دونَ المسّ بالرسالة الأصيلة للديانات.
إن معرفة الاختلافات الدينية والثقافية والسياسية والاجتماعية ودراساتها، هما الأساسان لإحياء العلاقات (السياسية، والاقتصادية، والاجتماعية، والثقافية) بين الضفتين، شريطة أن يتم توجيههما نحو احترام الشخص وحقوقه، ونحو البحث عن إنسية للتعايش، ونحو إعادة تنظيم ما يسمّى الاستراتيجيات السياسية والاقتصادية التي هي مصدر للنزاع والصراع.
