يرى المؤلف بريدراج ماتفيجيفتش أن البحر المتوسط طبع سكانه بطابعه وربط المؤلف الطبيعة المتوسطية بشجر الزيتون، وبتفاعل الحضارات الإغريقية والرومانية والإسلامية على التوالى، ومن رأية أن قبط مصر اهتموا بالنهر أكثر من اهتمامهم بالبحر. ويظهر فى الكتاب بوضوح البعد الحضارة مع تركيزه على الصلات الثقافية، لكل هذا، فإن الكتاب يسد ثغرة فى التناول الحضارى لمصر والمنطقة العربية، إذ جرى الاهتمام بالدائرة الإسلامية، ولم يكن هناك اهتمام بالدائرة المتوسطية مع أنها لا تقل أهمية عن الدوائر الأخرى آنفة الذكر.
