يتعرض العاملين في الوكالة الدولية للطاقة الذرية وأطباء الأشعة العلاجية، والمرضى خلال التشخيص والعلاج للإشعاع المضر والذي يتسبب بنشر الأمراض ويؤدي إلى ظهور بعض الأعراض المرضية. وبالتالي لا بد من التفكير بسبل الوقاية وذلك من خلال الاهتمام بمصدر الخطر وطرق تفاعله، المنبعث من الإنسان والبيئة.
وانطلاقاً من هنا تبنى "محمد جمعة" الاهتمام بالوقاية من الإشعاع المؤين للمرضى والأطباء فعمد إلى دراسة هذا الموضوع في ثلاثة كتب متناولاً في كتابه الأول الإشعاع وأنواعه، دوزميتري الإشعاع، التعرضات الإشعاعية، وأسس الوقاية منها.
أما الكتاب الثاني فقد تضمن التنظيمات والمسؤوليات، التعليمات الوقائية العامة، التحكم في المخلفات المشعة، قواعد إرشادية وإشارات تحذيرية وعلامات بالإضافة إلى نماذج يمكن الاستعانة بها في تنظيم الأعمال اليومية ذات العلاقة بالوقاية في الإشعاع المؤين كما ويتضمن توصيات اللجنة الدولية للوقاية الإشعاعية لعام 1990 وقرار وزير الصحة المصري الخاص بإجراءات الوقاية في مجال التصوير الصناعي الراديوغرافي 1989.
أما الكتاب الثالث فيهتم بالبرامج التدريبية للوقاية من الإشعاع واستخدامات التويدات المشعة في الصناعة والطب وفي مجالات الأبحاث وفي الأغراض التعليمية، ومبادئ الاستثناء مصادر الإشعاع والممارسات في التحكم التنظيمي.
والهدف من هذا الكتاب الأخير هو تقديم دليل يبين للعاملين بمجال الإشعاعات المؤينة الطرق المختلفة الخاصة بالاستخدام السلمي للمصادر الإشعاعية في مجالات الطب والزراعة والصناعة.
