إن الإشعاعات المؤينة ضارة بالصحة إذا تعدت كميتها حدودا معينة. وهذا يحتم عدم الإسراف في الكشف الطبي بالأشعة السينية. عند سقوط الأشعة المؤينة على الخلية فانها تؤين جزيئات الماء. و يؤدى تأين الماء إلى حدوث تغيرات كيميائية تؤدى بدورها إلى إحداث تغييرات في تركيب وظيفة الخلية . ويمكن أن تظهر نتائج هذه التغييرات في الإنسان في شكل أعراض سريرية كالمرض الإشعاعي أو إعتام في عدسة العين أو الإصابة بالسرطان على المدى الطويل وهكذا تؤدى الإشعاعات إلى إتلاف الخلية الحية من خلال تأين الماء الموجود بها وتكوين نواتج كيميائية جديدة تسمى الجذور الحرة مثل الهيدروجين و الهيدروكسيد المعروفة بنشاطها الكيميائي الشديد.ولقد تناول المؤلف كواشف الاشعاع بأشكالها المختلفة وتطبيقاتها لقياس الاشعاعات المؤينة
