"للحياة وجه آخر.. لون آخر.. هو آخر تماماً.. ليس له صلة بالوجه الذي عرفته.. الذي اعتدت عليه.. هو نقيض تماماً..، ربما هي حياة أخرى.. عالم آخر.. بشر من نوع مختلف.. بشر لا أعرفهم ولا يعرفونني..، لم ألتق بهم من قبل.. لم أرهم من قبل.. لم أحس بهم من قبل..، المشترك الوحيد بيني وبينهم هو الهيئة الخارجية.. لي رأس.. ولهم رؤوس..، حتى أننا في هذه اللحظة بالذات تشابهنا حدّ التطابق.. فرؤوسنا جميعاً حليقة.. الأصلع.. وذو الشعر الأجعد.. والأملس..، ربما فرق بيننا اللون فقط.. فالبعض برز فيه البياض.. والبعض الآخر الأسود الفاحم.. وآخرون مال اللون إلى الأشقر..، لكننا في نهاية الأمر.. جميعنا ذوو رؤوس حليقة.. إلا من بعض خطوط أهملتها الماكنة الصدئة لحلاق السجن.!!
هذا ما أحسست به تلك اللحظة.. وأما جالس على دكّة إسمنتية في باحة السجن السماوية- تمتد من باب "القاووش" المعتم حتى آخر الحائط مسافة خمسة أمتار.. تتصل بها في زاوية قائمة دكة أخرى تمتد، حتى البوابة الحديدية، بطول ثلاثة أمتار..
رواية العتيلي هذه ذكرتني أن حرب حزيران 1967، وهزيمتها لم تكتب حتى الآن بهذا الوعي الروحي والعقلاني للهزيمة بما تركته من آثار نفسية وروحية وعقلانية على الإنسان العربي..
ليست حرب حزيران هنا جوهر الرواية. إنها واحد من محاورها التي تصنع البطل (مهدي) وبقية شخوص الرواية لكنها محور مهم يجعل الطفل (مهدي) يكتشف الكثير مما يجري حوله.. يكتشف بدايات المقاومة السرية التي تتمثل في والده وأستاذه شافع الذي استشهد في إحدى المواجهات.
والرواية ليست رواية حرب، بل هي رواية الحب. ليس فقط حب مهدي لرواية أو لجميلة من قبلها، بل حبّه لمعلم الرياضيات الأستاذ نديم، ولمعلّم الرياضة الأستاذ شافع، وقبل ذلك حبّه لأبيه ولأخيه مالك (نموذجان للمقاومة السريّة) ولأمّه المكافحة ولأخته ملك...
هي رواية -سيرة قرية عتيل أيضاً، القرية الوادعة التي يلتقي فيها الشباب بالفتيات على عين الماء، ذلك اللقاء الرومنسي الشفيف..
