شغلَ موضوع الإغتراب الجانب الأكبر من إهتمامات الأدباء والمفكرين والفلاسفة والأنثروبولوجيين والفنانين، إذ نجده قد زاحم المصطلحات في كتب النقد والأدب، وعلم النفس والتحليل الإجتماعي واللاهوت، وظهر موضوعاً أساسياً في كثير من الأعمال، فهو ظاهرة إنسانية وجدت نفسها في مختلف أنماط الحياة الإجتماعية، وفي أغلب الثقافات التي بناها الإنسان، وقد تعددت معاني الإغتراب بمرور الزمن، إذ لا بد لكل مصطلح من أن ينشأ بسيطاً بدلالته، إلاَّ أنه يأخذ مديات أوسع بتطور الزمن، ثم يتحدد وتتعدد معانيه.
والواقع أنَّ مصطلح الإغتراب يُعدُّ الآن من أكثر المصطلحات تداولاً في الكتابات التي تعالج مشكلات المجتمع الحديث، ولا سيَّما المجتعم الصناعي المتقدم، إذ ظهرت في السنوات الأخيرة مؤلفات عديدة وفي مختلف اللغات، حاولت أن تتناول مفاهيم الإغتراب ومضامينه، وأساليب معالجته في مجالات متعددة، إذ عدَّ الكثير من الكتاب والمفكرين ظاهرة الإغتراب من أهم السمات المميزة للعصر.
وللإغتراب معانٍ ودلالات عديدة، تعكس طبيعة النظر إليه، والرؤيا الفنية له، فإن تتبع اللفظ في المعاجم العربية يشير إلى أنَّه مشتق من الفعل غَرَبَ، يغربُ، بمعنى غاب واختفى وتوارى وتنحى وبَعَدَ عن وطنه إذ جاء لفظ الإغتراب في المعاجم العربية بمعنى الغربة عن الوطن، فقد أشار الفراهيدي إلى هذا المعنى بقوله: (الغربة: الإغتراب عن الوطن، وغرب فلان عنَّا أي تنحى وأغربته وغرَّبته، أي نحيته، الغربة النوى والبعد).
