يتناول هذا الكتاب الحركة المسرحية في لبنان، منذ أن قدم مارون النقاش مسرحية "البخيل" عام 1847، مروراً بحركة التأليف والترجمة في بدايات القرن العشرين على يد الياس أبو شبكة، ومارون عبود، وسعيد تقي الدين وآخرون ممن تراوحت أعمالهم بين التاريخ والدين والشعر والهموم الوجدانية، وصولاً إلى عام 1960 حين انطلقت الحركة المسرحية الحديثة مع أنطوان ملتقى ومنير أبو دبس العائد لتوّه من باريس، وتأسيس "مدرسة المسرح الحديث" وبروز كوكبة من المسرحيين اللامعين، وحتى بدايات السبعينات وبروز المسرح اللبناني المعاصر.
وعليه، يشكّل هذا العمل مراجعة تاريخية، تمتاز بالدقة الأكاديمية في عرضها ومضمونها. جاءت شهادة شخصية من "جورج الراسي" لتتحدث عن مرحلة عاشها الكاتب يوماً بيوم، وكتب عنها يوماً بيوم، نقلها لنا كما هي، وبنفس الكلمات التي كُتبت بها قبل أربعين عاماً .. فالعصر الذهبي للمسرح اللبناني تجاوز النصف قرن.
يقسم الكتاب إلى سبعة فصول جاءت تحت العناوين الآتية: الفصل الأول: ديكور لمرحلة لم تكتمل، الفصل الثاني: أهل المسرح يتحدثون، الفصل الثالث: تجربة المسرح الشعبي، الفصل الرابع: مواسم مسرحية، الفصل الخامس: أصداء عربية، الفصل السادس: من المسرح العالمي، الفصل السابع: بأقلامهم – مقالات متنوعة.
