الذي ميز لبنان عن غيره هو ليس تعدد أديانه وطوائفه وإنما النظام الذي جعل من هذه الأديان والطوائف دويلات داخل الدولة اللبنانية ومن ثم إنقسام المجتمع اللبناني على ذاته دينياً وطبقياً.
كما وأثار الوجود الفلسطيني المسلح في لبنان إلى إيجاد شرخ سياسي جديد إذا تحولت المنظمات الفلسطينية الموجودة على أرض لبنان إلى عامل مؤثر وفاعل في خلق التجاذبات الطائفية بين اللبنانيين، في الوقت ذاته أصبح العامل الخارجي بعد إندلاع الحرب الأهلية هو الذي يتحكم في مسار الأوضاع الداخلية اللبنانية من خلال تعاظم الخلافات العربية – العربية وتدخلها مع القوى الإقليمية والدولية في الأزمة اللبنانية حتى أصبح يطلق عليها تسمية (حروب الآخرين على أرض لبنان) فأصبح لبنان ساحة لتصفية خلافاتهم.
فالمواقف العربية لحل الأزمة اللبنانية لم تكن حادة وحازمة في حل هذه الأزمة لشتت القرار العربي من خلال النزاعات العربية – العربية ومن ثم فشل قوات الردع العربية التي أرسلت إلى لبنان في أداء مهامها وكذلك لم تتمكن قوة الأمم المتحدة في جنوب لبنان من معالجة ما قدمت من أجله فضلاً عن تحول الصراع الداخلي في لبنان من صرع طائفي إلى صراع داخل الطائفة نفسها...
كل هذه الأحداث يتناولها الكتاب بشكل مفصل ودقيق.
