يناقش هذا الكتاب إشكالات العقل النقدي العربي في سعيه لولوج حقبة (الحداثة) العربية، وعصر التنوير المنشود.
اعتبر مؤلف الكتاب أن العقل العربي الحديث انشغل بمشكلات فُرضت عليه فرضاَ، لذلك عاش، (ردود أفعال) لم تمنحه فرصة التقاط الأنفاس، أو اختبار المقدمات التي تمهد له دخول عالم الحداثة، ليسهم مع غيره من الشعوب في مسيرة الحضارة الجديدة.
وفي هذا السياق يعزو المؤلف تأخر العقل العربي في الالتحاق بركب الحداثة الى طبيعة (النظام السياسي العربي) الذي نبت بإشراف من (الآخر، الأجنبي) ولحسابات خاصة به. لذلك عانى الفكر العربي من هذا الواقع المختل وتوزع مفكريه ومواطنيه بين مغترب زماناً ومغترب مكاناً وعقلاني – نقدي يتوسل بالبعد الاجتماعي السياسي لبلوغ غاياته التنويرية.
لأجل ذلك جاء الكتاب ليلقي الضوء على قضايا ملحة في عصرنا الحاضر ومنها: اشكالية العروبة والإسلام في الخطاب الفلسفي المعاصر، إشكالية الحرية في الفكر العربي بين أزمة الديمقراطية وغياب العقلانية النقدية، وكل ما له علاقة بإشكاليات العقل العربي المعاصرة وقضاياه الفلسفية النقدية، وتحديات القرن الواحد والعشرين وأسباب الصراع الخفية في إطارها الحضاري الى آخر ذلك من هموم وشجون العقل النقدي العربي…
