يوثَق هذا الكتاب (دروس في الفكر الفلسفي الإسلامي) التطور الفكري والمعرفي بعد الإسلام، والتغيير الذي بدأ يبرز في الفكر الإسلامي مع بداية القرن الثاني للهجرة.
بدأ التغيير بالمشكلة الكلامية، ومن ثم ساهمت التغييرات السياسية في ظل الدولة العباسية في قيام مؤسسات معرفية وعلمية لا سيما زمن المأمون (بيت الحكمة وغيره).
كلَ ذلك وفَر المناخ لقيام صرح الفلسفة الشامخ، وتفتق العقل الإسلامي العربي عن إبداع الفكر العلمي والفلسفي، في مدرستين شرقية وغربية.
أسماء فلاسفة المدرسة الشرقية (الكندي- الرازي- الفارابي- إخوان الصفا- إبن سينا- أبن الخطيب- وصولاً إلى الغزالي). أسماء مدرسة الفلاسفة الغربية (إبن باجة- إبن طفيل- إبن رشد) وكان هذا الأخير بوابة الحضارة الإسلامية إلى أوروبا، وقد ترجمت مؤلفاته إلى اللاتينية والعبرية والقشتالية وغيرها.
كما حفل التاريخ بأسماء لامعة كرواد للفكر والعقل المتفتح والعلم التجريبي والمنطق النقدي، هؤلاء هم منارة العلم أمام النهضة الأوروبية اللاحقة.
معظم هؤلاء الفلاسفة بحثوا في الطب والرياضيات والهندسة والفلك والكيمياء والفيزياء وجميع العلوم.
