في هذا الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا يرصد زيجمونت باومان صيغ البحث عن الفائدة والخيارات الرشيدة وكيف دُمِّرت ما تتّسم به العلاقات الوجدانيّة من ديمومة وعفويّة - تلقائيّة - عاطفيّة، حيث إن التأقيت والمدى القصير اللذين تقوم عليهما حسابات المجتمع الإستهلاكي الحديث يقومان بتوليد الحاجات بشكل مستمر، وتحويل كل قديم إلى شيء مستهجن يستحق أن يوضع في سلّة النفايات، بما في ذلك المشاعر والأجساد والصلات، فيأخذنا في رحلة تبدأ من الفلسفة لتدخل في صلب الإجتماع ثم تنتهي بالسياسة، فباومان يسعى إلى فهم طبيعة "الحالة السوسيولوجية" التي تعيشها مجتمعاتنا ويريد هنا أن يبيّن تجلّيات الحداثة السائلة في الوعي بالذّات والخيارات الشخصيّة، وبدلاً من "العلاقات" هي وصف عميق يعكس خيارات إجتماعيّة مركّبة ومعقّدة ولها ثمن في مجتمع تلاحم، في حين أن إنسان الحداثة السائلة يقرّر أنه لا يرغب في دفع الأثمان ولا إستثمار الوقت ولا التضحية من أجل أن يحصل على مزايا التواصل الإجتماعي.
وفي ظلّ تنامي السيولة في كل شيء من حوله، وتحوّل "المجتمع" إلى مجرّد "تجمّع بشري" تحوّل هذا الإنسان من "وضوح العلاقات الإجتماعيّة" إلى "غموض الصلات العابرة".
