إن اختيار اسم لمولود جديد قد لا يكون سهلاً، بل هو محيّر في أكثر الأحيان، وقد يشغل الوالدين فترة طويلة، وهما يبحثان بين الأسماء عن المناسب واللائق، وقد لا تتوفر الأسماء لهما كما تتوفر في كتاب يرشدهما إلى بقيتهما. ومن الآباء والأمهات من يهمه الأصل اللغوي للاسم المنشود، فيفضل أن يكون عربياً، لا أجنبياً أو معرباً، خصوصاً بعدما أصبح هناك عدد قليل من الأسماء الدخيلة على اللغة العربية، وبعدما باتت هذه الأسماء متداولة على نطاق واسع، وحدث نوع من الاختلاط بين ما هو أصيل وما هو دخيل، وأخذ الغموض يكتنف أصول بعض الأسماء فصعب الحسم في كونها عربية أو أجنبية. لذا جاء هذا الكتاب والغاية منه تعريف مجموعة من الأسماء العربية، تضم أكبر عدد ممكن مما هو مستساغ ولائق، وإهمال جميع الأسماء الأجنبية، وإن كانت فيها أسماء كثيرة الشيوع، فارسية أو تركية على وجه الخصوص وكان الاختيار لما تم إثباته من أسماء عربية على نوع من الاستساغة والاستنساب، بحثاً عما هو رشيق وذو حروف منسجمة، فيحسن في السمع، ويبعث في النفس رضاً وارتباطاً. إذاً، كان الاختيار اختياراً للأسماء اللائقة، في مستوى المعاني من جهة، وفي مستوى القيم الصوتية أو الإيقاغية التي تنطوي عليها هذه الأسماء من جهة ثانية. وقد تم ترتيب هذه الأسماء ترتيباً ألفبائياً وضمن ثلاثة أقسام: 1-أسماء الذكور. 2-أسماء الأناث. 3-أسماء مشتركة فين الذكور والأناث.
