بلغ السمو الروحي عند طائفة من المسلمين أن هجرت الدنيا وزخرفها وعكفت على العبادة متطلعة في يدي الخالق عازفة عما في يدي الخلائق. وقد تعارف الناس على تسمية هذه الطائفة بالمتصوفة. والتصوف تجربة ذوقية كشفية تنكشف فيها الحجب عن العابد يصل إلى حقيقة الغناء وهو في كل هذا تصدر عنه إشارات وعبادات تنبئ عن أحواله ومقاماته. والطواسين هو أحد النصوص التي صنفها أبو المغيث الحسين بن منصور الحلاج هو بمثابة سيرة الحلاج الذاتية والفكرية التي سبقت إعدامه بعد أن اتهم بالزندقة.
عنى المحقق بدراسة وتحقيقه لماضيه من الفقه وفلسفة. والطواسين جمع طاسين التي تعني مجموعة من السور القرآنية، أو مجموعة من الآيات. إن المؤلف السعيدي يرى في الطواسين نصاً نثرياً مفتوحة الدلالة والتأويل والابتكار لكونه من النصوص الصوفية المبكرة التي تسعى لتفكيك الفكر الصوفي وتحليله إلى صياغات واجتهادات يمكن للناس تدولها. ويبحث المؤلف في قصائد الحلاج وعن الدلالات السياسية والفنية المتداولة في شعره بكثير من الحيادية والاتزان رغم ما يكتنف ذلك من صعوبة في خضم خصوصيته الدلالة التعبيرية للمصطلح الصوفي التي تختلف بين حال ومقام وبين مقام وآخر.
