منذ إعلان الحلاج المتوفى عام (309 هجرية-922 ميلادية) معرفته العميقة بالله، انتقلت الحياة الفكرية والعلمية العربية الإسلامية نقلة نوعية غيرت مستوى أدائها الفلسفي والإبداعي عموماً. وستظل تجربته الصوفية الرائدة مثار جدل ما دامت اللغة العربية متداولة بين الناس.
فهو أول من تحدث بأسلوب منهجي متماسك عن علاقة الذات الإنسانية بالكون، وبالذات الإلهية، وحدد لكل اسم وصفة وحرف من هذه الثلاثية درجة تأثر وتاثير. تتجلى مقاديرها النسبية في مستويات تفاعل النشاط الطوني مع النشاط الوجداني للإنسان.
أما في تكامل الفكرة والمعنى،و تماثل الذات والوجود، فقد أعطى مفهوم التوحيد بعداً سلوكياً خالصاً، ينطوي ضمناً على إلغاء التضاد ومفهوم الزمان والمكان باعتبارها حواجز مادية تعيق تحرر الذات وتوقها إلى معانقة المطلق واللامحدود واللانهائي.
الحلاج أول من عمل على الربط بين الإنسان والنص والواقع، وفككها إلى رموز ومسارات ومصائر. وأول من اكتشف علم المصطلحات الصوفية وعلم الحروف، ووضع على بساط المعرفة والاجتهاد غالبية المفاتيح الصوفية في الفكر العربي، وكل ما هو في قمة الحدث والخيال، داعياً إلى تجاوز النص والواقع معاً إلى ما بعد الرؤية والعلم والعبادة.
