يبقى إسم الحلاّج مرتبطاً بشكل وثيق بإسم المستشرق الكبير "لويس ماسينيون" الذي عرّف الغرب عليه؛ هذا الرائد في الدراسات الإسلامية في فرنسا كرّس، طوال حياته، للشهيد المسلم أبحاثاً معمقة تثير الإعجاب بشمولها، وتأملات فلسفية وفقهية لا تضاهى من حيث عمقها، وتعاطفاً دينياً وإنسانياً بثَّ الحياة في معطيات التاريخ الجافة وحوَّلها.
لذلك قد يحكم البعض بقسوة على هذه المحاولة في التعريف عن الحلاّج، بعد بضعة أشهر من رحيل هذا المعلم، لكنني لم أشأ أن أقوم بدراسة جديدة عن هذا المتصوف المسلم المهم، أنا لم آت سوى بخواطر حول كل ما أدلى به لنا "لويس ماسينيون" في أعماله، إنها محاولة لفهم تجربة دينية فائقة الغنى على ضوء كل ما قاله لي وما جعلني أكتشفه في الإسلام، منذ أن تعرفت إليه، أي منذ خمسة وعشرين سنة؛ فكان هذا الكتاب الفرصة السانحة بالنسبة لي للتقرب منه ومن فكره.
