"الضلال" ، عمل إبداعي جديد للكاتب باسل بديع الزين وقد وسمه ب (هامش لسيرة مفترضة) ما يعني انفتاح السرد على الذات وخلق عالم موازٍ للواقع . فالسارد هنا كلي الحضور وكلي المعرفة، فعبر قناته التعبيرية، يقربنا كثيراً من مجريات الأحداث التي لا يحكيها كأحداث وقعت في الماضي، ولكن يشخصها أمام أعيننا في الحاضر حية نابضة.
في المضمون تشكل علاقة الكاتب بأبيه محور العمل في الضلال إذ يجعله بؤرة النص، وقد عبر عن ذلك بلغة مؤثثة بالأناقة والتكثيف والبحث عن مكامن الجمال الأخلاقي لمن يروي عنه (الأب)، لذلك نراه حين يصفه ينتقي مفرداته انتقاءاً ذكياً، وبنسق خاص يشدنا إليه، ثم يدخلنا في لعبة القراءة طوعاً نستمع إليه ونشترك معه في فهم (النص)، وهذا يحيلنا إلى أن الكاتب لا يرى ذاته إلا من خلال علاقته بأبيه. ومن هنا تشكل صورة (الأب) بالنسبة للزين مظهراً وعلامة وجود ودلالة تتمظهر في السرد بوصفها صورة مكتملة ونهائية.
من ثنايا الكتاب نقرأ:
"كان أبي على مسافة واحدة من جميع أخوتي، لكنه كان يخصني بمعاملة خاصة، ويحرص على أن أتفتح فكرياً بعيداً عن ضوضاء الغيب، بقدر ما كان يحرص على ألا أورط نفسي في سجالات لا طائل منها، بل من شأنها أن تحدث شرخاً عميقاً في علاقتي مع محيطي الإجتماعي. أذكر جيداً حينما اتخذني، كعادته، رفيقاً لنزهته على ضفة نهر قريتنا، وطلب إلي أن أحفظ وصيته عن ظهر قلب قائلاً: "هؤلاء مجموعة أناس لم تستطع أعني الإكتشافات العلمية أن تبدل في قناعاتهم شيئاً، فكيف الحال وهم ينظرون إلى الفلسفة على أنها كنزٌ صريح؟ إنزع عنك أقماطك وحدك بنيّ، دون أن تلوي على أحد".
