تتحدث الرواية عن ذلك الوهم الكبير الذي يصنعه أغلبنا في حياتهم قصة بسيطة ومعقدة ينقلها لنا كلا من "شريف" و"ياسين" الوليدان التوأم "لوداد" تلك الم بسيطة الحال والتي تزوجها الأبن الثري "المهندس جلال" عن قصة حب برغم اعتراضات والدته "إشراق هانم" طفلين في سن السابعة من العمر مختلف كلاهما تمامًا عن الآخر يتحتم عليهم العيش في ظروف غير مستقرة بعد انفصال والديهم أشياء من حولهم تتغير علاقات مختلفة ومتشابكة يظهر فيها كلاً من "حسن" العاشق الأبدي لوداد وابن عمها "جيهان" الزوجة الثانية للأب العاشق وسبب الطلاق حتى سقوط شريف في فخ الإدمان.
تبدأ أحداث الرواية وتنتهي في مصحة تأهيلية لعلاج الإدمان بين بطل الرواية وطبيبه المعالج "دكتور إبراهيم" بعد انقضاء ثلاثة أشهر من التعافي أثر حادثة رهيبة فقد خلالها توأمه يسترجع فصلاً بعد آخر ذكرياته مستعيدًا معه الطبيب ما يعرف من خلال حكايا والديه في تقريره الطبي تعتمد الرواية على فكرة إن الصدق أحيانًا قد يكون هو أكذب الكلام وأن ما نراه ليس مضمونًا بالدرجة التي نحسبه عليها وأن تعريفاتنا لنفس الصورة تختلف بحسب ما يعتقده كل منا وأننا لأسباب عديدة قد نغفل الاعتراف بواقعنا ونصنع لأنفسنا عالمًا من وهم ندمنه ويتملكنا يومًا بعد يوم حتى نفقد السيطرة تمامًا ولا يعود بإمكاننا استعادة العالم الحقيقي مرة أخرى إلا بصدمة حقيقية قاسية في غالب الأمر لا ننجو بعدها.
