نبغ في تاريخ الشعر العربي عدد من الشاعرات المبدعات منذ قدم الشعر العربي وإلى عصرنا هذا، مع أن عدد الشاعرات لا يزال نسبياً أمام عدد الشعراء الرجال.
غلب على شعر المرأة في العصور القديمة أغراض المراثي والحكمة ومديح الأهل والعشيرة والوصف، وقلما تجد فيه الأغراض الغزلية والهجائية حيث أن المرأة العربية بطبيعتها الشرقية المحافظة، وبقيمها الإسلامية النبيلة، وبمهمتها التربوية في الحياة الأسرية، هذب مشاعرها وضبط عواطفها نحو القيم المفيدة من الأغراض والمعالجات الأدبية.
ومع تطور المجتمع العربي وتقدم الحياة المادية والمدنية وتوفر وسائل النقل وطرق وأساليب التعليم والمواد العلمية المقروءة والمسموعة والمرئية، نهضت المرأة العربية بحركة أدبية جمعة في الأدب العربي وتضاعف عدد الشاعرات النساء الأدبيات بعدد مضاعف عدد مرات حيث أصبحت نسبة الشاعرات النساء قريبة من الشعراء الرجال وتوسعت الغرائض الشعرية التي عالجتها المرأة العربية مثل الأغراض الوطنية والسياسية وأغراض الرمز التي ترمي بمقصودها الشاعرة إلى ما هو محظور ذكره أو التعبير عنه.
لقد كانت الخنساء أميرة الشعر النسائي في العصر الجاهلي وصدر الإسلام، واليوم يتوفر عدد غفير من الشاعرات تميزت كل شاعرة منهن بأسلوب أجمل من سابقة من أمثال نازك الملائكة وفدوى طوفان وأحلام مستغانمي وبهيجة أدلبي، ونترك للقارئ هذا الكتاب الحكم والمفاضلة بين الشاعرات الحديثات والقديمات والمتعة الأدبية الجمّة.
