لم تقدم أية دولة او مؤسسة على جمع الشِّعر العربي في موسوعة واحدة، نعم شعراءه جميعاً، سواء أكانوا معروفين أم منسيِّين أم مجهولين، فظلّت هذه الفكرة حلماً يراود عدداً من المثقفين في حقل النّهضة الحقيقة للأدب العربي، حتى أتيح لها أن تلقى سبيلها إلى الحياة في هذه الموسوعة التي يضعها المؤلف بين أيدي القراء.
حيث تضم هذه الموسوعة الشعر المعروف والمجهول، وتضعه ضمن حلقات متتالية، تصل أبعد حلقات الإبداع في التراث، بلحظات الحضارة والإزدهار ثم الذبول والإضمحلال، إلى عصر النهضة والإنبعاث الحاضر... وتعطي منظراً واحداً متكاملاً لروائع الشعر العربي، وتحيي أواصره الفنيّة، بوحدة عضوية شفافة، وتُظهر نمو أساليب التّغيير الفني، وتنوُّع أشكال الصِّياغة اللُّغوية وتقدمها المطرد حسب موحيات العصر.
حيث شملت الموسوعة مختلف عصور الشِّعر، من العصر الجاهلي، إلى العصر الإسلامي الأول، إلى العهد الأموي والأندلسي، فالعباسي، وعصور الإنحطاط وعصر النّهضة حتى العصر الحديث، ولذلك جاءت في خمس مجلدات من الحجم الكبير، يحوي كلّ مجلد نحو خمسة آلاف بيت من الشعر لعشرات من الشُّعراء.
وقد حرصت الموسوعة على تأليف مقدمات وافية لعصور الشِّعر، تحدِّد فيها ملامح العصر من النّاحية الفنّية، وتبرز التطورات اللُّغوية والخصائص الأدبية التي ابتكرتها مذاهبه الكبرى، وتجمع ما بين آراء النُّقاد القدامى، وبين إتجاهات التحليل الفكري واللُّغوي والنفسي، وبذلك تعطي هذه المقدمات أجواء العصر بشكل جديد، يصل أصوله التاريخية والحضارية بآفاق المواقف الفنية الحديثة، ويكشف عن معاني وخصائص لتلك المذاهب، لم تكن معروفة، أو لم تكن تلقى الإهتمام والعناية من قبل الدارسين.
