الهدف من الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا، ليس هو ذكر الشعراء العرب جميعاً، وإنما الهدف هو ذكر الأعلام من الشعراء العرب الذين كان لهم شهرة واسعة وحضور متميز ومنزلة خاصة احتلوها بسبب ما امتازوا به من خصائص أدائية متفردة.
لقد احتوى هذا الكتاب أكثر من مائة شاعر من مختلف العصور بدءاً بالشعر الجاهلي فالإسلامي الذي يضم صدر الإسلام وعصر بني أمية فالعباسي والأندلسي فالحديث وانتهاءاً بالشعر المعاصر.
لقد رتب هذا الكتاب على أساس الترتيب الهجائي، وهي طريقة متبعة في الموسوعات والمعجمات، وهي طريقة سهلة تعين القارئ على الرجوع إلى الموضوع المطلوب بصورة سهلة.
إن الغرض من هذا الكتاب، ليس هو دراسة الشاعر دراسة تفصيلية، وإنما إضاءة شيء يسير من حياة وشعر الشاعر، مع ذكر بعض النماذج الشعرية المميزة في شعره. لذلك عرضنا لكل شاعر على أساس خطة معينة نقوم من خلالها بذكر شيء يسير من حياة الشاعر وخصائص شعره وذكر نماذج معينة من شعره.
لقد اعتمد في هذا الكتاب على مجموعة من المصادر من أهمها كتب الدواوين الشعرية، وكتاب ديوان الشعر العربي لأدونيس، وكتاب تاريخ الشعر العربي الحديث لأحمد قبش، وكتاب الشعراء العرب لفواز السعار وهو كتاب في جزئين، وغير ذلك.
