تتوقع الأمم المتحدة خلال الـ25 عاماً القادمة حدوث أغلب النمو السكاني في مدن العالم الثالث، وبالمعدلات الحالية، سوف يعيش 60% من إجمالي سكان العالم في المدن بحلول عام 2030. ومع نمو المدن يزداد عدد الفقراء داخلها وتصبح البطالة والجوع وسوء التغذية من الأمور المألوفة. والفقراء في المدن الكبيرة ينفقون أغلب مدخولهم على شراء الطعام والبقاء على قيد الحياة. ومن ثم فإن أي طعام لا حاجة إلى شرائه، يكون بمثابة رفاهية لا حاجة لها.. ونتيجة لذلك نلاحظ ازدياد عدد الأهالي الذين يسعون لزراعة ما يأكلونه لتحسين وجباتهم الغذائية ومداخيلهم الضعيفة. ومع ذلك نجد أن الزراعة داخل المدن -الزراعة الحضرية- في نظر كثير من البلديات مشكلة يجب استئصالها بدلاً من اعتبارها حلاً لجعل المدن وبيئتها أكثر استدامة.
وللزراعة الحضرية في الواقع تاريخ طويل، فقد أدرك واضعو السياسة الحضرية في مختلف أنحاء العالم حقيقية قدرة إسهام الزراعة ذات التنظيم الجيد في ضمان تحقيق الأمن الغذائي للمدن وإمكانية توفيرها لفرص العمل وتحسين البيئة باستغلال المساحات الشاغرة داخل المدن على نحو منتج ومفيد. وسيتعرض هذا الكتاب للخبرة البحثية لمركز بحوث التنمية الدولية -كندا (IDRC) والجهات المشاركة معه بما فيها الحكومات المحلية في الشؤون المتعلقة بالزراعة الحضرية ويركز على تأثير عمله البحثي على السياسات الحكومية. ويتناول الكتاب نمو الشبكات المدنية في أفريقيا وأميركا اللاتينية المعنية بدعم الزراعة الحضرية وزيادة عدد منتجي الغذاء داخل المدن. ويقدم الكتاب توصيات خاصة تهدف لمعاونة واضعي السياسة على كافة المستويات الحكومية من أجل تعظيم الفائدة الكامنة في الزراعة الحضرية. ويخرج الكتاب برؤية عن كيفية إسهام تلك السياسات في العمل على تغيير أحوال المدن في المستقبل القريب.
