يتناول المؤلف في هذا الكتاب قضايا العلمانية والإسلام والديمقراطية، وهي من دون شك قضايا كانت وما زالت تشغل حيزاً واسعاً من دائرة الإهتمام الفكري والسياسي، وتغطي مساحة شاسعة من رقعة التداول الإعلامي بين مختلف الدوائر الغربية والعربية - الإسلامية على السواء.
وعلى الرغم من كثرة ما أثارته مسألة العلمانية من صخب بين أهل الفكر والسياسة، وما صاحب ذلك من منازعات في عالمنا العربي، ولا سيما خلال القرن الأخير، فإن ما سطوته أقلام الكتاب والباحثين في هذا المجال لا يكاد يشفي الغليل، أو يفي بالغرض.
وينقسم هذا الكتاب إلى ثلاثة أبواب، تناول المؤلف في الباب الأول مبحث العلمانية، وقد سلك في ذلك مسلكين متكاملين، أولهما: معالجة العلمانية من الزاوية النظرية، وثانيهما: تناول العلمانية بإعتبارها ظاهرة تاريخية إجتماعية في إطار ما بات يعرف اليوم بلغة علوم الإجتماع والسياسة بالعلمنة، أما الباب الثاني فقد خصصه لدراسة العلاقة الرابطة بين الإسلام والعلمانية، بيان الطابع المركب للإسلام والعلمانية على السواء، فضلاً عن جلاء الخاصية المعقدة لهذه العلاقة، سواء عند تناول العلمانية في بعدها النظري والنصي، أم في بعدها التاريخي الإجتماعي.
ثم ختم بمسألة الديمقراطية التي خصصها للباب الثالث برمته، إذ أمسى من الوضوح بمكان أن الشعار الديمقراطي قد حل شعار تصدير المدنية والحضارة في تحريك الجيوش والأساطيل وتسويغ غزو الأوطان وإطاحة الحكومات؛ ويجدر التنبيه على أن العمل ليس مجرد بحث أكاديمي بارد منعزل عن الشأن العام، وإنما هو في بعد من أبعاده الأساسية محاولة لتلمس مسالك الإجابة عن مجمل القضايا الكبرى التي تشغل العالم من حولنا، وتمس أوضاع مجتمعاتنا في الصميم.
