"مرثية نينوى": "يخرج منها اللؤلؤ والمرجان"... لكن الشطآن... تقسيم كلًّ نوارسها... أنّ بها طيناً يشبه إنسان... أجساد تركض خلف قيامها... تُسمى شعباً... شعبٌ فوق الموجة ظمآن... وطحينٌ مثل الرما يداعبه الطحان.. والطحّانْ... مثل الأمة جوعانْ... وشراعٌ خلِقٌ عريان...".
النص لا يعدو كونه مجرد شكوى يقدمها الشاعر جلال صادق العلي لملهمته "نينوى"، وتجسيده لما لها من أثر في حياته، ولعل العلاقة الروحية التي تربط بين المكان والشاعر تركت أثرها على لغته وهو يقدمها في قصيدة رثائية عن الشهداء بحيث يمكن القول أنها أي شخصية الشهيد امتلكت حدود النص كلها، مع تصوير تجربة الإحساس بالظلم التي يقدمها الشاعر من خلال رفض فكرة الإستبداد والسجن "أما السجان... فهو سجينٌ... يخشى من مكر القبضان".
والعمل على خلق مناخ جديد يشترك في صنعه أبناء الوطن مع عشتار والشاطئ والمرفأ والربان وما هو أبعد من ذلك، وإستخدامها كأقنعة ورموز للتعبير عن تجربته الشعرية بالتماهي مع هموم وطنه وأمته، وبهذا تقترب قصيدته من قصيدة المناسبة الإحيائية، يقول الشاعر عن نينوى "..ز تحلم أن تصبغ كلَّ الأرض بقاني شفتيها... دجلة بالأحمر يبدو زاهر الألوان.. يولد من نهر الدم شراعٌ... وتصلي للعرش الحيتان... هذي فلسفةٌ... كتبها آشور... وليحذر منها كل الشجعان... وليهنأ بمفاخرها كلُّ جبانْ".
يضم الكتاب قصائد في الشعر العربي الحديث جاءت تحت العناوين الآتية: "صباح الغار"، "داحس والغبراء"، "يسألني عن مذهبي؟"، "بيروت"، "لسنا موتى"، "سرقتني الأرض"، "هل تنام الذكريات؟"... وعناوين أخرى.
من الكتاب نقرأ:
تحت عنوان صباح الغار: جئت صباحاً من رحم الظلماء، من عتمة كل الأشياء، من ضيق الوادي، من محل صخور صماء، إلا أنك أعطيت الشمس الأضواء، هذبت سباع الأرض، ومدنت الصحراء، ومن السفح المجدب سارت، باسمك ألوية خضراء.
