"رأيت الإسلام فأحببته... وقبل أن أراه سمعت عنه، وما رأيت كان نقيص ما سمعت!... فأدركت عندئذ معنى القول القائل: "بين الحق والباطل أربعة أصابع، فالحق أن تقول رأيت، والباطل أن تقول سمعت"، كما أدركت مدى تجنّي الغرب على الإسلام، فإذا هو قد حوّل جماله قبحاً، وطهره رجساً، وشجاعته إرهاباً، وإيمانه كفراً، ورحمته ظلماً، وإذا فضائله تصبح نقائص، وإذا وحيه يغدو تجديفاً على الله والسماء!...
لقد ظل الإسلام قرونا طويلة هدفاً للطعن والإفتراء... غير أن الحال، بصورة عامة، تبدّلت على مرّ السنين، فلم تعد، اليوم، كما كانت عليه بالأمس، إذ راح الإسلام، رويداً رويداً، ينكشف على حقيقته، للملأ الغربي، لا سيما في فرنسا حيث يبلغ المسلمون حوالي ثلاثة ملايين، أسهم علماؤهم ومفكروهم، بنسبة كبرى، في "إعادة إعتباره".
ولكن تيار التطرف الذي برز إلى الوجود في بعض البلدان العربية والإسلامية جعل الغرب يرسم أكثر من علامة إستفهام حول دين أنزل هدى ورحمة للعالمين، فكان مثالاً للتسامح والرفق فإذا هو، عبر تيار التطرف هذا، يبدو لأهل الغرب وكأنه دين التعصب والإرهاب.
فالإسلام، في أساسه وجوهره، في أصله وأصوله، دين الرحمة والسلام، دين الرفق والتسامح، دين المعرفة والنور، لا دين العنف والتعصب والجهل.
غايتي من هذا الكتاب - "الإسلام كما عرفته" - أن أسهم في إلقاء شعاع على حقيقة هذا الدين الذي أحببت وأحبّ.
