إن صلب المسيح هو مرحلة، المرحلة قبل الأخيرة، من حياته على هذه الأرض. فلا بد للقارئ، لكي يدرك الأسباب والظروف التي أدت إلى هذه المرحلة، من أن يلم، ولو إلمامة خاطفة، ببعض المعطيات والأحداث التاريخية والدينية والاجتماعية والسياسية التي سبقت محاكمة المسيح والحكم عليه بالصلب. ذلك أن الموقف الذي وقفه زعماء اليهود من المسيح كان، بنسبة كبرى، بتلك المعطيات والأحداث. والمسيح لم يكن، في الأصل، اسم المخلص، بل يسوع كل اسمه. ويسوع الذي سيكون محور المعالجة هذا الكتاب، كان في رأي زعماء اليهود، والشعب في أثرهم، كاذباً ومحدّقاً، لأنه أجاز لنفسه أشياء كثيرة في طليعتها ادعاؤه أنه المسيح ابن الله، فكان جزاؤه تسميراً على الصليب.
