يضم دراسات معمقة لثلاثة أحياء سكنية متجاورة ضمن الحدود البلدية لرام الله والبيرة المحتلة. أول هذه الأحياء هو مخيم الأمعري ويسكنه لاجئون من فلسطين الساحلية، أغلبيتهم من فئات عمالية و"مهمّشة"، وشريحة دنيا من الطبقة الوسطى. أمّا ثانيها فهو حي أم الشرايط، الذي كان نما بطريقة عشوائية نسبياً في فترة ما بعد أوسلو، ومعظم سكانه من عائدين، ونازحين عن مناطق أُخرى. وأمّا ثالث هذه الأحياء فهو المصيون، وهو الأقدم نسبياً، وتتكون أغلبية سكانه من شريحة عليا من الطبقة الوسطى.
تتولى الأبحاث الواردة في هذا الكتاب، من خلال المقابلات النوعية ومناهج أُخرى، استنطاق مفاهيم القرابة والتضامن الأهلي، والحي، متجاوزة المفاهيم الشائعة عن أشكال التضامن الإجتماعي الحديثة والتقليدية عبر الإنتباه إلى التجربة المعاشة لأُناس حقيقيين يكافحون في هذه الأحياء المتمايزة التكوين الإجتماعي والجذور المناطقية في ظل العنف الكولونيالي الإسرائيلي في خضم الإنتفاضة الثانية. ولقد أملى هذا التمعن إعادة الباحثين لمفاهيمهم الأصلية فيما يتعلق بإستراتيجيات البقاء والمجابهة والحراك الإجتماعي لدى الأُشر والأفراد.
