تعتمد طبيعة هذا الكتاب والمبادئ التي استضيء بها في تأليفه، في المقام الأول، على السلسلة التي ينتمي إليها. فهو، لهذا السبب، مدخل (أولي) لنحو اللغات السامية المقارن، قصد به، بادئ ذي بدء، أن يكون كتاباً مدرسياً text book، وأن يكون محدداً في نطاقه ليلائم منهجاً للمبتدئين. ولا بد أن يكون مثل هذا المدخل واضحاً في تعبيره من غير أن ينقص شيئاً من احترام المصطلح العلمي. ولا بد أن يقتصر على الحقائق الجوهرية، وهو يذكر المسائل المتباينة ذات الأهمية الخاصة. وكذلك لا بد أن يجتنب "الافتراضات" غير المستقرة تلك التي لا يطمإن إلى صحتها (أو المتنازع في أمرها)، وهو يشير إلى بعض خطوط البحث، قيد المتابعة، وبعض تشعبات الرأي التي هي أكثر أهمية، لكي يقدم فكرة مناسبة من الاتجاهات العلمية اليوم.
