إن لمعرفة لغات وتاريخ الأمم السامية القديمة أهمية كبيرة إذ إنها تساعد في الكشف على ما تركت هذه الأمم من عجائب الآثار وما كان لها من فضل في تكوين حضارة العام القديمة التي لا تزال تؤثر بتقاليدها وروحها على حضارة العالم الحديث، وتنقسم المراجع التي تبحث في اللغات السامية إلى قسمين أولهما في تاريخ اللغات السامية، وقد الفت فيه كتب وضعها المستشرقون "نلدكة، ويروكلمان، وبرجشترسر" وهناك مقدمان وضعت في صدر كتب النحو والصرف لجملة من اللغات السامية تشتمل على نظريات شتى تساعد الباحث في تاريخ اللغات السامية كثيراً، وتمكنه من الوصول إلى نتائج ذات أهمية عظيمة، أما القسم الثاني فيشمل على مؤلفات وضعت في الآثار التي كشفت في مواطن الأمم السامية القديمة، وهذا المؤلف "تاريخ اللغات السامية" لمؤلفه أولفنسون يجمع بين تاريخ اللغات السامية وبين جملة نماذج من آثارها.
وكان المؤلف كلما انتهى من البحث والتنقيب في لغة من اللغات السامية، اقتبس أمثله متنوعة من آثارها، لأن الآثار هي المرآة التي تتراءى فيها الصور الصحيحة للغات الأمم وعقلياتها. وقد عنى ولفنسون بالبحث في نشأة اللغة العربية ووصل فيه إلى نتائج هي ثمرة جهوده الشخصية، إذ كانت بحوث المستشرقين في نشأة اللغة العربية ناقصة وموجزة بل وغامضة في حين كانت بحوثهم في أغلب اللغات السامية وافية لا سيما في العبرية فلهم أبحاث جليلة لذلك اهتم المؤلف جد الاهتمام بالبحث في اللغة العربية واضعاً لها ثلاثة أبواب مفصلة ألمّ فيها بكل أطوار حياتها منذ الجاهلية إلى الآن.
