ذهب الفلاسفة إلى أن إمتياز الذهن البشري مقابل سائر الموجودات إنما يتجلى في قدرة الإنسان على صياغة الكليات، إلا أننا نجد أن الأصح القول إن الأهمية البالغة للذهن البشري تكمن في إدراك الإنسان للمعقولات الثانية، لأن منها فقط يستطيع أن يستنتج قضايا ضرورية من المفاهيم الكلية، وبها فقط يستطيع أن يصوغ أقيسةً ويستنتج منها، ويأتي بمعلوم جديد، ويتوفّر على فكر منطقي يؤمن له فلسفةً حقيقيةً.
إلا أن هناك أسئلة كثيرةً يمكن طرحها حول هذه المعقولات؛ أهمها أنه كيف يمكن أن نكشف حقيقةً، بمساعدة معانٍ ذهنية محضة، لا مصداق لها في الخارج ولم تؤخذ منه؟ وهل هذه المعاني تتصل بالخارج بطريقة من الطرق؟ وإذا كانت ذهنيةً محضةً فكيف يمكننا الإعتماد عليها في معرفة عالم الواقع وكشفه؟.
وهناك نوعٌ آخر من المعقولات لا إستقلال لها في الوجود ولا حتى في المفهومية، فلا يمكن تصوّرها من دون تصوّر غيرها، وهي المفاهيم الخرفية؛ لكن بالرغم من أنها مجرّد روابط إلاّ أنّ لها دوراً كبيراً في ربط المعاني والمفاهيم المستقلّة.
ولعل الفرق بين الإنسان والحيوان ليس في تصوّره المفاهيم المستقلة وإنما في المفاهيم والروابط غير المستقلة، فما هذه هي الروابط التي تشكّل أساس التفكير الفلسفي؟.
هذه الأسئلة وغيرها مما يرتبط بها هي محل البحث في هذه الدراسة.
