لم يكن هدفنا من وضع هذا الكتاب الإحاطة الشاملة بالعصرين المملوكيّ والعثمانيّ، حضارة وأدباً، فالعصران ممتدّان إمتداداً زمنيّاً واسعاً جداً، يصل إلى حوالي ثمانية قرون، والأدباء والشعراء فيهما قد يعجز المرء عن إحصائهم، فضلاً عن جمع إنتاجاتهم الأدبيّة... وكلّ ذلك يقتضي جهداً فائقاً جمعاً وتنقيباً وبحثاً وتأليفاً، وهو عمل جدير بأن تنهض به مؤسّسات أو مجموعات، إذ إنّه يفوق قدرة الأفراد.
فالهدف، إذاً، مقصور على أن نقدّم للقرّاء عموماً، ولطلاّب الأدب خصوصاً، صورة موجزة عن مناحي حضارة العصرين، وعن الإنتاج الأدبيّ فيهما.
وسعياً وراء هذا الهدف، ارتأينا أن نجعل الكتاب قسمين: شكّل القسم الأوّل مدخلاً إلى دراسة العصرين، من خلال تعريفهما، بدءاً بعصر المماليك البحريّة والبرجيّة، وصولاً إلى العصر العثمانيّ.
ثم سلّطنا بعض الأضواء على مناحي الحضارة في هذين العصرين، فتناولنا، أوّلاً، العصر المملوكيّ، حيث عرضنا لنظامه السياسيّ، والعسكريّ، والإداريّ، والدينيّ، منتقلين إلى المجتمع المملوكيّ.
ثم تناولنا، ثانياً العصر العثمانيّ: مظهرين نظام الأمبراطورية: الإقطاع، والجيش، والسلطة الحاكمة، والقانون، والقضاء، ورجال الدين، وطبقات المجتمع، خاتمين، كذلك بإضاءات على العمارة العثمانية.
أمّا القسم الثاني، فيدور على دراسة الأدب في هذين العصرين، وقد جعلناه بابين: الأوّل للشعر، والثاني للنثر، أما الباب الأوّل فقد تناولنا فيه، الإتجاهات البارزة في الشعر، وأبرز الفنون التقليدية، والأشعار الشعبية، وضمن دراسة بعض أعلام العصرين؛ وأما الباب الثاني - النثر فقد عرضنا فيه أنواع الكتابة النثريّة وخصائصها.
وعرضنا بعض أعلام النثر في العصرين، فتناولنا في العصر المملوكيّ: ابن منظور، القلقشنديّ، وتناولنا، في العصر العثمانيّ، كلاًّ من يوسف البديعيّ، ونجم الدين الغزّيّ كنموذجين من كتّاب ذلك العصر.
