إذا لم يكن علم السيمياء، بالمعنى الحديث، قد أصبح فرعاً من المعارف الصورية معترفاً به بوصفه مجال بحث مستقل إلا في هذا القرن وخصوصاً بعد النصف الثاني منه، فهذا لا ينفي أن أصوله تعود إلى بداية الفلسفة، وبالفعل فإن معظم المذاهب والتيارات الفكرية قد تعرضت لهذا الموضوع بشكل أو بآخر وفق أغراضها المنهجية، وليس من مبالغة في القول أن الفكر العربي استطاع أن يتوصل في مرحلته المتأخرة إلى وضع نظرية مستقلة وشاملة، يمكن اعتبارها اكمل النظريات التي سبقت الأبحاث المعاصرة.
هذا ما يحاول الباحث الكشف عنه من خلال تلك الدراسة حيث يبين أهمية المساهمة التي قدمها المناطقة والأصوليون والبلاغيون العرب في التطرق إلى موضوعات علم الدلالة، انطلاقاً من بعض المفاهيم الأولية التي وضعتها الفلسفة اليونانية، والتي كانت محصورة ضمن إطار الدلالة اللفظية، ويبرز الباحث بأن العرب توصلوا تدريجياً إلى تقييم مجال أبحاث الدلالة على كل أصناف العلامات باعتمادهم الدلالة اللفظية نموذجاً أساسياً، كما كانت الحال عليه في بدء السيمياء الحديثة، مبيناً أنهم نجحوا جزئياً في كيفية تطبيق النوعيين الآخرين عليها، إن في الدلالة البسيطة أو في المركبة، وقد خرج الباحث بنتيجة وهي أن أبحاث العرب التي تتناول تعيين نوعية دلالة الألفاظ المركبة أو بوجه عام العلامات المركبة وتحليل الدلالة المؤلفة من تسلسل عدة توابع دلالية، تبقى تلك الأبحاث مدخلاً جديداً ذا منفعة قصوى للسيمياء المعاصرة.
