والآن فإنّ الأمّة، التي هزّتها الجنازة التي استعادت توازنها، والآن فإن زمّاري سان خاسنتو، ومهربي غواخيرا، وزُرّاع الأرز في سينو، وبغايا كوكامايال، وسَحَرة سيريه، وعمّال الموز في أركاتاكا قد طووا خيامهم للخلاص من السهر المضني واستعادوا صفاءهم، واستعاد رئيس الجمهورية ووزراؤه وكل الذين مثّلوا الجمهور والسلطات الخارقة للطبيعة سيطرتهم على ممتلكاتهم؛ والآن فإنّ الحَبْر الأعظم قد ارتفع إلى السماء بالجسد والروح؛ والآن فإنه يتعذّر التجوال في ماكوندو بسبب الزجاجات الخاوية، وأعقاب السكائر، والعظام المنخورة، والكؤوس والأسمال والغائط الذي خلّفه الحشد الذي جاء لحضور الدفن؛ والآن هو زمن إتكاء الكرسي على الباب الأمامي وسرد تفصيلات هذه الفوضى الوطنية من البداية، قبل أن يتسنّى للمؤرخين بلوغها.
